InternCLE podcast Episode: 015 Intern Interview Sam Frieberg
Sam is a non-traditional student (going back to college after being out a bit) who just graduated with a degree in Accounting from Cleveland State University (CSU). Sam balanced working with mostly night classes at CSU.
Sam had a friend and mentor that has encouraged him along the way, and that is how we met. His mentor encouraged him to get experience in as many areas of accounting as possible. Having a mentor to support his journey has had a big impact on Sam’s success and drive to achieve.
Sam has had four internships in the different areas of Accounting. Sam set goals for himself. He started by targeting full time employment in his chosen field upon graduation. Then he backed that into smaller goals and targets. Those interim targets meant internships. Getting the first internship was the toughest, someone had to take a “chance” on Sam.
Sam’s internships included inventory accounting, large firm public accounting in Columbus, tax accounting and real estate accounting. Variety helped him identify what he wants to do going forward. Sam enjoyed project-based work, like auditing.
Sam loves Cleveland because it is small but has the big city feel. His message to employers running internship programs – put thought and intention into the program and that will send the message to students that they are welcome and needed.
Sam’s insightful approach to his career and his ambition will serve him well. I thoroughly enjoyed this interview and hope you do too.
