InternCLE Podcast Episode: 017 Gallagher – Eric Taylor
Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. (AJG) is a US-based global insurance brokerage and risk management services firm headquartered at in Rolling Meadows, Illinois (a suburb of Chicago). Eric Taylor leads Talent Management for Gallagher. Eric works out of Chicago and has a team that helps him execute their global internship program. The internship program has been around since 1965. The majority of the executive leaders in the US were former interns themselves. This demonstrates Gallagher’s commitment to their internship program as a part of their talent pipeline. Gallagher focuses on development of the interns in each office and on early talent development once they come on full time.
Most of the talent they recruit is on the “production” side of the business. These are students that are passionate about being in a sales type roll. Gallagher is looking for the “go getter” personality, a “growth” mentality.
The 2019 summer will bring over 500 interns to the many global locations across Gallagher. 85% of those will be in sales roles. Around 10 of those interns will be in Cleveland, with more interns around the state of Ohio. Gallagher has sales competitions for their interns – which includes a case study and teams competing against other cities. It’s like a March Madness type regional tournament. The executive leaders judge the competition as well. Interns fly to headquarters for their orientation and then head back to their branches for the rest of their internships.
Eric mentioned that he looks to his leadership team and the Gallagher internal resources. He likes the book Good to Great and Emotional Intelligence for Sales Success.
